Herrewig Scores Twice to Lift Soccer to 3-1 Win at Malone

CANTON, Ohio – The Michigan Tech soccer team began its final weekend of the regular season with a 3-1 win over Malone on Friday (Nov. 1) from Pioneer Field. Lexi Herrewig scored the game's first two goals and Haley Crites added the third as the Huskies improved to 10-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the GLIAC.

Herrewig's two goals came in a span of 69 seconds in the opening half. She scored on a breakaway from 16 yards out 32:31 into the game from Crites. Herrewig then headed in a cross from Amanda Whiting for her seventh of the season at 33:40.

"Lexi had two absolutely beautiful goals and played a great game," Tech coach Michelle Jacob said. "She was persistent at attacking the goal as were all of our forwards."

Malone (4-10-1, 1-9 GLIAC) made it a one-goal game 18 minutes into the second half on a goal by Sarah Reutter. Ally Smith assisted on the tally.

Crites iced the game for the Huskies with her second of the season as she chipped a shot over the Malone goalkeeper with less than 15 minutes left (76:44). Assists went to Jessica Splittgerber and Herrewig.

"I thought we did a great job of creating shots and it took us little while before some of them fell," Jacob said. "We did a much better job in the second half. We possessed the ball better after telling the team to play simple and take shots that make sense without forcing anything."

Tech outshot Malone 24-6, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. MaryBeth Spoehr picked up her fifth win of the season (5-1-1) between the pipes, stopping two Pioneer shots.

"MaryBeth had to make a couple saves but stepped in and distributed and controlled the ball very well," said Jacob.

The regular season wraps up on Sunday (Nov. 3) at Walsh with a 12:30 p.m. start.

"We're looking forward to Walsh on Sunday," added Jacob. "We definitely realize that we're going to have to pick up our game and play the way that we are capable of playing."

The Huskies will host a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game on Tuesday (Nov. 5) at Sherman Field. The game begins at 2 p.m. with an opponent to still be determined.
