Soccer Shuts Out Ferris State on Senior Day

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team wrapped up the regular season home schedule with a 3-0 shutout victory over Ferris State on Sunday (Oct. 27) afternoon from Sherman Field. The Huskies scored a goal in the first half and added two in the second on senior day.

"We had a great game today," Tech soccer coach Michelle Jacob said. "First half we did pretty well and I think second half we played really well. We possessed the ball better and created more opportunities with two beautiful goals in the second half. It's a great way to end our senior day and our last regular season home game."

Amber Hynnek opened the game's scoring with her first of the season midway (23:30) through the first half. Hynnek headed in Lexi Herrewig's corner kick.

Haley Crites added to the lead with less than eight minutes (82:34) remaining in the game with a blast from 25 yards out. Lindsey Van Rooy chipped the ball back to an open Crites for her first goal of the season.

Herrewig added a goal of her own with a sharp-angled shot from 10 yards out that beat the Ferris goalkeeper up high with six minutes left (83:59).

Tech improves to 10-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the GLIAC. The Bulldogs fall to 8-6-1 and 6-4-1 in conference play.

The two teams combined for 28 fouls in the game.

"In the GLIAC we're used to physical games and that's just the nature of the beast," Jacob added. "We told our players to keep playing our game. We're trying to be aggressive and not foul but all in all we played a good clean game."

MaryBeth Spoehr got the shutout to improve to 4-1-1, stopping five Bulldogs shots. Ferris outshot Tech 16-15 but the Huskies had more shots on goal, 10-5.

Tech's 10 seniors were honored on the field before the start of the game.

"That group of seniors coming in their first year and over the past four years have set a great tone for us to build in the last four years–and have the successes we did–but also build into the future," added Jacob.

"They set the bar high from the beginning and it's bittersweet. We're going to miss them like crazy but we're proud so of the accomplishments they've made and everything they've given to us."

Tech wraps up the regular season next weekend in Ohio. The Huskies play at Malone on Friday (Nov. 1) and Walsh on Sunday (Nov. 3). The GLIAC Tournament begins on Nov. 5 with the top four seeds hosting.
