Soccer Completes Two Win Weekend With a Shutout Against Northwood

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team stretched its winning streak to four consecutive matches with a 2-0 triumph over the Northwood Timberwolves on Sunday afternoon at Sherman Field.  With the victory, the Huskies improved to 8-2-1 overall (5-0-1 GLIAC) and have now outscored their opponents 10-3 over their last four matches.

"We had a phenomenal start. Our possession from the first whistle just set the tone for the game," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "We were able to move the ball, keep it and make them chase us. It led to us creating a lot of opportunities and shots on goal."

Junior Annie Dahlquist opened the scoring with her second goal of the year 10:57 into the match. Sophomore forward Lexi Herrewig floated a corner kick from the left side to the front of the net, where Dahlquist headed the ball past Northwood goalkeeper Julie Shields.

Tech had another solid scoring opportunity just one minute later, but senior forward Katie Boardman's attempt sailed just wide of the right post.

Although Michigan Tech sustained pressure for much of the remainder of the half, which included a good scoring chance by Haley Crites that nearly got past the outstretched arms of the Northwood goalkeeper late in the frame, the score remained 1-0 at intermission with Michigan Tech holding an 11-2 shot advantage. 

The Huskies were awarded a penalty kick with 21:30 remaining in the second half after Amanda Whiting got behind the defense and went one-on-one with Shields but was fouled in the box. Lindsey Van Rooy was tabbed to take the penalty kick for Tech and promptly tucked a low shot into the left corner to make it 2-0 and wrap up the scoring.

"Our defense has been solid and our goalkeeping has been solid. I thought we played a beautiful possession game today," added Jacob.

Tech finished the contest with a 23-2 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. Huskies goalkeeper Jenna Phelps stopped both shots she faced.

Michigan Tech hits the road for a pair of games next weekend. The Huskies will face Ashland on Friday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. before taking on Ohio Dominican on Sunday (Oct. 20) at noon.
