Huskies and Wildcats Play to 1-1 Draw

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech took 29 shots and put 11 on goal but connected on just one in a 1-all tie with Northern Michigan in GLIAC women's soccer today at Sherman Field.

Lexi Herrewig scored in the 69th minute but NMU's Paula Hafner answered just seven minutes later. Neither team scored in the final 34 minutes including overtime, ending in a the first tie of the season for both teams.

"NMU came out a played a great game," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "They put a lot of pressure on us, and it took us a while to adjust. They really stepped up their game from the last time we saw them."

Tech, which defeated the Wildcats 5-0 in Marquette in a non-conference game earlier this season, had a couple good scoring chances in the first half. Katie Boardman found some space atop the goal box with eight minutes to go and fired a shot just high over the crossbar.

The teams battled back and forth in the second half. Defender Kaitlyn Boelter stifled a good NMU scoring chance in the 68th minute. Moments later, Herrewig dribbled through the Wildcats defense and finished with a shot off the right post and in.

The lead was short-lived. NMU ran a set play off an inbounds pass. Gabriella Garza flicked a pass into the box to Paula Hafner, who finished with a shot into the upper part of the net from a tough angle left of the goal.

Tech held a 4-1 lead in shots in the overtime and a 29-15 margin for the game.

Michigan Tech, now 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in GLIAC action, will be off until next Friday (Oct. 4) when they play at Findlay.
