Bemidji Holds Off Huskies 2-1 in Women's Soccer

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Bemidji State got one goal on a deflection off a Michigan Tech defender and another on a penalty kick on its way to a 2-1 victory over the Huskies in non-conference women's soccer today. The Beavers improved to 3-0-0 with the win while the Huskies fell to 2-2-0.

Tech had a great scoring opportunity in the ninth minute as Lindsey Van Rooy collected a pass inside the box but couldn't get the shot over BSU goalkeeper Amanda Garvin.

Ten minutes later, the Beavers scored when Sarah Stram fired a shot along the end line toward the goal that hit a Huskies defender and went into the goal.

Midway through the half, Tech was whistled for a foul in the box. Tiffany VanHaaften converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.

The hosts grabbed some momentum back right before halftime when freshman Kathryn Fife scored her first career goal. Madeline Faust chipped a pass to Fife, who connected from 15 yards out with just 29 seconds left in the half.

Tech had its chances to tie the game in the second half but couldn't convert. The best was on a penalty kick by Katie Boardman that was missed wide left.

"Bemidji's a good program," said head coach Michelle Jacob. "They play a similar style to us. They were able to capitalize on their opportunities and we were not. We had an unlucky bounce on their first goal, but that's the way things go sometimes. We've got to be a little better defensively and limit their chances."

Both teams got off 12 shots. Tech put eight on net compared to five for BSU.

Michigan Tech will next play again on Friday (Sept. 20) with a 7 p.m. start vs. Lake Erie. It will be both teams' GLIAC opener.
