Huskies Win Third-Straight at Lake Superior State

Huskies Win Third-Straight at Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team once again had a full team effort translate into its third-straight win with the 81-49 victory at Lake Superior State on Thursday afternoon.

Michigan Tech elevates to 10-8 overall and 6-4 in the loop, while Lake Superior State falters to 1-18 overall and 0-10 in the league.

"I thought we started off slow with our urgency and gave up two wide open threes and we can't start like that," head coach Sam Clayton mentioned. "But we did turn it around relatively quickly got some things going offensively--to have three in double-digits and two with nine points was great for us to be able to knock down some shots—thats huge, I think that our bench came in and brought us incredible energy and points which is super encouraging because you need to go deep into your bench if you want to do well late in the season. Dani helped us push in transition and she only had two points but she had four assists and she created for others and broke presses single handedly."

The Huskies got down 6-0 early following back-to-back triples by the Lakers and ended the first quarter trailing 14-9. The Black & Gold backed that up with a 27-point barrage in the second quarter to take a nine point advantage (36-27) to head into halftime.

Katelyn Meister sparked the second stanza with an old-fashioned three-point play before Isabella Lenz knocked down back-to-back jumpers on the far baseline to regain the lead 16-14 in under 90 seconds of action. The Huskies lead swelled to 10 points just before the halfway mark in the quarter following a layup from Alex Rondorf.

The Lakers wouldn't back down, climbing back to within five-points (27-22) with 2:42 remaining in the first half. Rondorf hit a 3-pointer with 1:41 to play before Lenz capped the final minutes with two free throws and a jump shot just before halftime.

The Black & Gold overwhelmed Lake Superior State in the second half, pouring on 45 points in the final 20 minutes while also holding the Lakers to a miniscule six points in the fourth quarter.

Alyssa Wypych brought the score to double-digits with a 3-pointer at the 5:59 mark of the third quarter to make it a 12-point game.

Isabella Lenz and Alex Rondorf combined for 11 of the Huskies 21 points in the third quarter.

Michigan Tech's bench shined through in the fourth quarter with 19 points and seven from Brittney Mislivecek. Maja Kozlowska accounted for six points and Dani Nuest had two points, four assists and two rebounds.

Sara Dax scored five points in the win and became the 28th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

"I'm proud of everyone, obviously super happy for Sara, who scored her 1,000th point," Clayton added. "Super happy for her and all our seniors who stepped up in different ways in this team win."

Lenz led three Huskies in double-figure scoring with 19 points, along with Alex Rondorf (13) and Brittney Mislivecek (10). Rondorf and Katelyn Meister each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Grace Bradford led the Lakers with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
