HOUGHTON, Mich. – A slow start offensively was too much for the Michigan Tech women's basketball team to overcome, falling to Wayne State 61-42 at the SDC Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

"Obviously missing shots is one thing but the consistent turnovers–we just looked flat. We have to figure it out," head coach Sam Clayton said. "We're going to keep trying new stuff–Sara stepped up as a leader and put everything out there which is great to see and we can build off that. Dani came in as a freshman not playing a ton and I thought she did good."

For the second-consecutive game, Michigan Tech (5-4, 1-1 GLIAC) made just two field goals in the opening quarter, forced to play catch up to Wayne State (7-2, 1-1 GLIAC), who put up 18 points in the first frame of the contest.

The Huskies showed life in the second quarter, outscoring the Warriors 17-14 with five points apiece from Veterans Sara Dax, Katelyn Meister and Isabella Lenz before another cold streak offensively translated to eight points in the third quarter to put WSU ahead 47-29 with one quarter to go.

The Warriors' defensive efforts in the first half showed 10 turnovers turned into 15 points for WSU.

The Huskies cut the deficit to 15 points in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer by Dani Nuest with 4:55 remaining. However, the Black & Gold would not get any closer as the Warriors closed the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run to seal the win 61-42.

Michigan Tech shot an uncharacteristic season-low 31.4 percent from the field and went just 5-of-22 from 3-point range. Wayne State went 9-of-25 from beyond the arc and 41.2 percent from the field while winning the rebounding battle 36-29.

Dax produced a season-high 16 points to lead the Huskies offensively while also grabbing a team-high six rebounds.

Shea Tripp led the Warriors with 26 points and nine rebounds.
