Women’s Basketball Announces 2017-18 Team Awards

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball program and Head Coach Kim Cameron recently announced the 2017-18 team award winners. Senior guard Lindsay Winter, who was chosen as the Most Valuable Player, was one of five Tech players to honored with team awards.

Winter, who's from Clare, Michigan, averaged 11.3 points per game and in addition paced the Huskies in rebounding at 6.8 boards per game while dishing out a team high 4.9 assists per game. She ranked second in the GLIAC in assists per game. Winter poured in a career high 29 points in a season opening win over Davis & Elkins November 10th, dealt out a career high 10 assists against Grand Valley State on December 7th, and grabbed a career best 12 rebounds at Ursuline on November 11th. Winter was GLIAC North Division Player of the Week three times this past season and was named to the All-GLIAC First Team.

This year's Most Improved Player award went to junior forward Michelle LaFave who had some big games for the Huskies in their national tournament run. LaFave averaged just under eight points per game and connected on nearly 51 percent of her field goal attempts. She also averaged around two rebounds per game. LaFave posted double figure point totals in 11 contests this year and had a career high 17 points against Ashland on January 4th.

Junior Elizabeth Kelliher was selected as the Scholastic Achievement Award winner for the second consecutive season. Kelliher a forward from Waukesha, Wisconsin, averaged 9.3 points per game and converted a team best 55.0 percent of her field goals. Her field goal percentage was fourth highest in the GLIAC. Kelliher averaged 6.2 rebounds per game and led the conference in blocks with a 2.3 blocks per game average. Kelliher grabbed a career high 13 rebounds against Ferris State on February 15th and had a season high seven blocked shots at Wayne State on January 18th. She was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection and named to the All-GLIAC All-Defensive Team. Kelliher has a 3.94 GPA and is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Journalism.

Elisa Jurmu, a senior forward from Houghton, Michigan, was chosen for the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. Jurmu had a career high 13 points in a conference win at Purdue Northwest on December 9th. She helped spark the offense by going 5 of 7 from the floor while finding the target on three of her four shots from behind the three-point arc. Jurmu also poured in 11 points at Lake Superior State on January 13th.

Cassidy Trotter was the 2017-18 Outstanding Newcomer of the Year award winner for the Huskies. Trotter, a freshman guard from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, saw action in 21 games with one start this season, logging crucial minutes down the stretch. Trotter had a season high 11 points in a key 86-81 win at Northwood on February 10th. She also tossed in 10 points at Purdue Northwest on February 3rd.

The Huskies closed the season with an overall record of 23-6, won the GLIAC North Division regular season championship, and made the programs 19th trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
