Women's Basketball Team Award Winners Named

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Jillian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) earned team most valuable player honors for the 2014-15 Michigan Tech women's basketball season as the team handed out awards Saturday (Apr. 18). The Huskies held a social celebrating a successful season that included GLIAC regular season and tournament championships and a 28-3 overall record.

Ritchie averaged 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during her senior season. The team co-captain posted a team-best 51.3 field goal percentage with four 20+ point games on the year including a 35-point effort at Northwood (Feb. 19). The 5-11 forward was named GLIAC North Division Player of the Week three times during the regular season before gaining GLIAC Tournament MVP accolades following Tech's 68-52 victory over Ashland Mar. 8.

Fellow senior co-captain Emily Harrison (Elk Mound, Wis.) was named the team's Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award winner. The 6-4 center played in 29 games, averaging 3.4 points and 1.1 rebounds.

The most improved player award went to sophomore Kelli Guy (Kalkaska, Mich.). The 5-5 guard went from averaging 1.6 points per game as a freshman to 11.0 this past season. She started 26 games and ranked 11th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (44.1). Guy earned GLIAC All-Tournament Team honors after hitting six 3-pointers in the GLIAC title game.

The team's outstanding newcomer of the year was freshman Sarah LewAllen (Rochester Hills, Mich.). The 5-8 guard appeared in 24 games mainly in a defensive role. She totaled 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists on the year.

Junior Kerry Gardner (Middleton, Wis.) took home the scholastic achievement award for having the team's highest cumulative grade point average—a 3.94 in exercise science. The 5-9 guard played in 27 games, starting five and averaging 2.3 points per game.
