Women's Basketball Tips Off Season at Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Michigan Tech women's basketball tipped off its 2014-15 season with an exhibition at UW-Green Bay. The host Phoenix jumped out to an 18-2 lead and held on for a 74-50 victory in front of a crowd of 2,084 at the Kress Events Center. With five Green Bay-area players on the Huskies roster, Tech faithful made up more than a small percentage of fans.

The Phoenix, who have nearly everyone back from their team that won the Horizon League a year ago, opened the game by scoring the first seven points. They built up a 23-5 advantage in the first eight minutes.

Tech remained within 19 at halftime, and the margin hovered around 20 the remainder of the game.

"We asked them to compete and go blow-for-blow with this team," said Tech coach Kim Cameron. "We had a rough start. We were a bit scared at the beginning, but there were times where we went basket-for-basket with them.

"We definitely saw some good things that we can build upon."

Danielle Blake led a balanced stat sheet for the Black and Gold. She scored 10 points and was the only Husky in double figures. Kerry Gardner had seven points and a team-high six rebounds. Jillian Ritchie, Brenna Heise and Lindsay Winter all chipped in six points apiece.

Green Bay was led by 12 points from freshman Jessica Lindstrom, sister of former Tech standout Lindsey Lindstrom (2008-12).

The hosts shot 42 percent from the floor and forced 20 Tech turnovers. The Huskies shot 36 percent from the field.

All 12 available Huskies saw the floor. Junior Kylie Moxley came off the bench to play in her first game since Feb. 1. All five rookies— Winter (6 points), Sarah LewAllen (4 points), Elisa Jurmu (2 points), Elizabeth Kelliher and Hannah Stoll—took the court for the first time in Tech jerseys.

Michigan Tech will play another preseason game before officially opening its season Nov. 15 at Minnesota Duluth. That exhibition is scheduled for Thursday (Nov. 6) at 7 p.m. vs. Finlandia at the SDC Gym.
