Huskies Sink Lakers For 11th Straight Win

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's basketball team swept the opening weekend of GLIAC North Division play and extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 76-54 dismantling of Grand Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the SDC Gym. The Huskies held the Lakers to only 33.3 percent shooting from the floor and were led by Mackenzie Perttu's 24 points.
The Lakers led 20-15 midway through the first half. Perttu responded, scoring the game's next 10 points to give the Huskies their final lead of the game. The full run was 17-2 for a 10-point (32-22) lead. Perttu finished with 20 points in the first half, and Tech led 38-28 at the break.
GVSU cut the lead to single digits (47-38) with 14:10 left, but Tech went on a 17-3 run—capped off by a Jillian Ritchie three—to take a commanding 64-41 lead with 5:53 remaining.
The Huskies led by as many as 25 down the stretch after a 3-pointer off the fingertips of Kelcey Traynoff and a layup by Brenna Heise. All 14 Huskies saw action in the game.
"What and awesome weekend for us," Tech coach Kim Cameron said. "Ferris and Grand Valley are always big rivalry games, and today we were finally able to put a full 40 minutes together."
Tech is now 12-2 overall and 10-0 in the GLIAC. GVSU lost its third straight and falls to 8-6 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Perttu had her fourth 20-point game of the season, shooting 9-for-16 from the field. She had 26 points in Thursday's win over Ferris State.
"Mackenzie proved that she can put together two good games," added Cameron. "Today she was aggressive and confident and that's what we need to see every game from her."
Danielle Blake and Paige Albi each scored 13 points for the home team. Blake added eight rebounds and three blocks, while Kate Glodowski and Ritchie chipped in with seven points apiece.
"Kate is a senior and knows how to play and how to win," said Cameron. "She the most active player on our bench. She's always waiting for her opportunity and is ready to go when she gets in."
Tech shot 48.1 percent (27-for-58) from the floor and held a 44-31 rebounding advantage. The Huskies dominated scoring in the paint, 40-14, and had 17 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.
Both teams made five threes and 17 free throws.
Grand Valley was 16-for-52 from the field. Dani Crandall (19) and Taylor Lutz (15) were the only two Lakers in double figures
The Huskies head on the road to Wayne State on Jan. 23 and Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 25. The Warriors are 8-1 in the GLIAC and play Northwood later tonight.
"Wayne State is big, tough and physical," Cameron said. "They can do everything from the inside and out. It's going to be a battle but we're excited for the challenge."
