Huskies T&F complete Ice Melter Open

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech track & field team hosted a small indoor track meet at the SDC Multipurpose room to serve as a rust buster ahead of the beginning of the outdoor track & field season on Saturday morning.

The Ice Melter Open showcased seven events heavily involved in distance races along with pole vault.

Quotable

"It felt like it was important to get our season started earlier than usual even if it was in a slightly unconventional way this year," head track & field coach Robby Young said. "Our hope is that we're a little sharper the first time we get onto an outdoor track and against stiffer competition than today. With that said I am really happy with the efforts as far as results go. Anna Schueller breaking the school record in the pole vault is great after how she's battled during the offseason.

"Naseem had a coming out party of sorts with an impressive 5k time especially on our indoor surface and I look forward to his progress this spring. I was also proud of the effort that Ingrid Seagren put in in a solo 800m and to run a PR under those circumstances is impressive. Overall I am really excited about where we are as a team overall and looking forward to getting on an outdoor track in two weeks."

"I thought today went really well," assistant track & field coach Kristina Owen mentioned. "Our track and field athletes have been training all year, and it was great to add another competition to our calendar and give them a chance to bust off the rust and get ready for the season to come.

"It was a small meet, with just our team and a handful of open athletes, but there was plenty of exciting racing. We're deepest in the distance events, and the mile, 5k, and 800m races were some of the hardest fought. It's hard to PR early in the season and on the tight curves of an indoor track, but John Paul Norland and Lucas Seng both managed it in the Men's 800m.

Our grad. Assistant Coach Luke Moore deserves a special shot out, as he paced heats of the mile, 5km, and 800m. As a graduate of the team and now on the coaching staff, he continues to model running as a lifelong sport!"

Sam Lange impressed in the Huskies' rust buster, dipping under 1:56 for 800m with a blistering time of 1:55.68. First year Brandon Latta ran a respectable 1:56.29 while John Paul Norland also clocked a sub 1:57 performance in 1:56.90.

Ingrid Seagren won the women's 800m in 2:24.86.

Sophomore Nik Thomas broke 4:20 in the mile with a time of 4:19.63 to win the event by over six seconds.

Cedar Gordon claimed the women's mile with a time of 5:20.95.

Gordon was also in the 5,000m helping first year Sophia Rhein to a 18:24.52.

The men's 5,000m showcased a solid performance by sophomore Naseem Dhaouadi, who won by over 30 seconds in a time of 15:10.87.

Ryan Schwiderson and Ashley Plum each pulled off a double-win, winning the 200m and 400m races, respectively.

The pole vault school record holder, Landon Cosby, soared to a mark of 15-3.5 clearing the height on his second attempt. Jesse Henderson (13-9.75) and Toby Bonner (12-10) rounded out Tech's vaulters.

Anna Schueller looked to be in mid-season form in the women's pole vault, clearing 11-10, which is better than her 11-9.75 mark, which broke the school record last outdoor season.
