Michigan Tech Opens Track & Field Season at St. Norbert's Quad Meet

DE PERE, Wis. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track & field teams put on solid performances Saturday afternoon (Mar. 30) at the St. Norbert's Quad Meet in Wisconsin. The Michigan Tech men's side finished first with 222 team points, while the 142 team points scored by the MTU women saw them finish third.

"Today was a solid start given the cold, windy conditions," said head coach Jake Isaacson. "We had quite a few athletes take advantage of the opportunity and start their season off well."

The Michigan Tech men had four first-place individual finishers and one first-place team finish on the afternoon. Nate Nannfeldt crossed the finish line of the 400m with a time of 50.56, followed by Dante Cyrus (51.27), John Bailey (51.66), and Jacob Namyst (51.71).

In the 1500m, Clayton Sayen (4:00.85) finished at the top of the field. The freshman was followed by fellow Husky Logan Lukonic (4:05.11) in second, and Luke Moore (4:06.04) in third. The Michigan Tech 'A' 4x400m relay team finished first with a time of 3:28.00, and they were followed by the Tec 'B' relay team with a time of 3:30.11.

In the field events, Ben Mahonen and James Huey were the top performers for Michigan Tech. Mahonoen placed first in the long jump (5.91m) and second in the triple jump (12.41m), while Huey took first in the triple jump (12.44m) and second in the long jump (5.82m).

Four individuals and one relay team took first place for the Michigan Tech women. Gabrielle Hummel took first in the 28.47, followed by Alicia Shatrau in third with a time of 30.04. In the 1500m, it was Gabrielle Feber crossing the finish line in first with a time of 4:51.59. Following the freshman in Black and Gold in the top five was Theresa Passe (4:54.45) in third and Jesse Jacobusse (4:55.76) in fourth. Emily Vigil took first in the 5000m with a time of 18:30.10, and Sarah Montgomery hit a mark of 3.30m to take first in the pole vault. The 4x400m 'A' relay team ran unopposed and crossed the finish line at 4:17.93.

There were also a number of strong performances across the board for the Michigan Tech men and women. Derek Flory (11.59) and Jason Bell (25.00) both took fourth in the 100m and 200m, respectively. Bell also took second in the 110m hurdles (15.91), while Robbie Watling placed third in the 5000m (15:59.39). In the 400m hurdles, Flory (59.15) took third and Gage Armstrong (59.33) crossed the line in fourth.

In the field events, Riley Roquet (4.27m) took second and Cade Meyer (3.97m) took third in the pole vault, while Michael Frahm (13.94m) and Sam Fuhrman (13.51m) took third and fourth in the shot put. Frahm also placed fifth in the discus (36.53m), and Furhman and Mahonen finished third (42.62m) and fourth (33.18m) in the javelin.

On the women's side, Laura Lyons finished fifth in the 400m (1:02.82), Chloe Strach took fourth in the 5000m (19:48.00), and Erin Lipp came in fourth in the 400m hurdles (1:10.90). For the field events, Kayla Brei finished third in the triple jump (10.11m), Kendra Monette (11.48m) and Katherine Jarvis (11.25m) finished inside the top five of the shot put, and Jarvis rounded out the top five finishes for the Tech women with a fifth-place finish in the discus with a mark of 34.71m.
