Huskies Wrap Up Thursday Competition at GLIAC Championships

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track & field teams both competed Thursday on day two of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, which are being hosted by Ashland University. The Tech women generated 16 team points in finals events on Thursday while the Tech men picked up five team points in the standings.

The Tech women earned their points with strong performances in the finals of the 10,000 Meter Run and the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase. In the steeplechase, Robyn Holmes powered the Huskies with a fifth place finish thanks to a time of 11:32.07 which also created a new school record. The previous record time of 11:36.36 was set back in 2007 by Kaylyn Gaul. The run by Holmes produced four points for the Huskies.

Teammate Carly Huggins wasn't far behind Holmes, crossing the line with a time of 11:39.14 which was good for sixth place. Her place in the event added another three points to the team totals.

In the 10,000 Meter Run, two runners combined to post nine team points for the Huskies. Emily Vigil paced Tech with a four place finish in the event with a time of 38:26.75 leading to five points. In a similar finish to the steeplechase, Sophia Farquhar hit the line in fifth place just a few seconds behind Vigil. Farquhar's time checked in at 38:32.98 and produced four points for the Huskies.

The Tech men had a pair of top seven finishers in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase on Thursday at the GLIAC Championships. Nate Carey led the charge in sixth place with a time of 9:38.69 followed by Hanbyul Johnson in seventh place courtesy of his time of 9:55.55. Carey picked up three team points while Johnson collected two points for the Huskies in the standings.

The Tech men and women also had participants in six other finals events on Thursday and those results are below. A number of preliminary events took place on Thursday with the bulk of final round competitions scheduled for Friday in Ashland.
