Huskies Post Good Results at Al Owens Invitational
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track & field teams both had strong team finishes at the Al Owens Invitational hosted by Grand Valley State University this weekend. The Tech men completed the meet in 6th place out of 22 teams while the women earned a 10th place finish out of 25 total teams.
On the women's side in running events this weekend, Aimee Allen was Tech's top finisher in the 200 Meter Dash with a 13th place finish out of 65 total runners. Allen crossed the line with a time of 26.22 seconds in the event. Madisyn Estkowski had a strong showing for the Huskies in the 800 Meter Run, logging an 11th place finish thanks to a time of 2:19.86. The field was comprised of 78 competitors in Saturday's meet.
Ashley Veale powered her way into the top ten of the 400 Meter Hurdles, finishing 7th in the finals on Saturday. Veale notched two team points by hitting the line with a time of 1:04.60.
Robyn Holmes came close to getting a school record in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase after guiding the Huskies with a sixth place finish. Holmes recorded a time of 11:37.37 which was just over a second off the Tech record of 11:36.36. Carly Huggins made the top ten in the standings at No. 10 with a time of 11:47.91.
The Michigan Tech 4x400 Meter Relay team checked in at No. 5 on Saturday to notch four points in the team standings. Veale, Allen, Estkowski, and Jesse Jacobusse combined to post a time of 4:01.59 in the event.
In the field events, Jenna Burns generated the highest individual event finish for the Huskies on Saturday. Burns fired the shotput 12.87m on her way to second place in the individual standings. There were 38 competitors in the Shot Put and Burns' score produced eight points for the Huskies as a team.
On the men's side, Korson Mundinger made his way to the finals in the 100 Meter Dash where he placed in the top ten at No. 7. Mundinger battled his way through the preliminary round with a time of 11.09 seconds to finish seventh and then clocked a time of 11.07 in the finals for Tech. Mundinger jumped back into the top ten again in the 200 Meter Dash with an eighth place showing thanks to a time of 22.27 seconds. The field for the 200 Meter Dash was comprised of 45 athletes.
John Bailey had Michigan Tech's best run in the 400 Meter Dash, placing 15th with a time of 50.60 seconds. Brendan Klynstra was just outside of the top ten at No. 11 in the 1500 Meter Run with his time of 4:00.50 on Saturday. The field in the 1500 Meter Run had 29 athletes who competed in it.
When it came to the hurdles, Jacob Namyst covered the distance in the 400 Meter event with a time of 56.57 seconds. His time was good for an 8th place finish in the standings and generated a point in the team standings.
Hanbyul Johnson landed in second place in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase this weekend with an impressive time of 9:46.05. It was the best individual finish in the running events for the Huskies and resulted in eight points towards the team standings.
Mundinger, Chad Brown, Jacob Jarvis, and Jason Bell guided Tech to a fourth place in the 4x100 Meter Relay with a time of 43.84 seconds. The Huskies were eighth in the 4x400 Meter Relay as John Bailey, Zach Okma, Joshua Rzeppa, and Jacob Namyst combined to produce a time of 3:22.75.
Keith Lemley began the field events for Tech with an outstanding second place finish in the Pole Vault. Lemley cleared the bar with a mark of 4.71m and was just shy of a school record that stands at 4.76m. Lemley was able to record eight points for the team in the overall meet standings.
James Huey had a team high finish of sixth in the Triple Jump for the Huskies with a mark of 12.83 while Ben Mahonen checked in ninth with a jump of 12.08m.
Michael Frahm had the top individual performance for the Huskies on Saturday with a first place finish in the Shot Put. Frahm recorded a throw of 15.76m to generate the top spot in the standings which had a total of 30 athletes. Frahm also competed in the Discus and Hammer Throw where he reached 14th (39.48m) and 19th place respectively (41.69m).
Michael James rounded out the field events for the Huskies by competing in the Javelin Throw. James was 10th in the event standings after firing the javelin 41.22m.
The Huskies will compete this week at the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College on Thursday and Friday before taking part in the St. Norbert Quad on Saturday in De Pere, Wisconsin.
