Petermann Selected for GLIAC Commissioner’s Award

BAY CITY, Mich. – Michigan Tech track and field athlete Kyle Petermann was one of six male recipients of the 2017 Spring GLIAC Commissioner's Award, announced by the conference office on Thursday (June 15). Six male and six female student-athletes that excel academically and on the fields of play are presented after the fall, winter, and spring athletic seasons with the award.

Petermann, a senior thrower from Clintonville, Wisconsin, qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2017 for the second straight year, after finishing 14th at the national meet in the Discus Throw a year ago. Petermann turned in his best performance of the 2017 season at the GLIAC Championships in May. Petermann's throw covered a distance of 52.83m which also generated eight points in the team standings for Michigan Tech. By virtue of his second place performance, Petermann earned 2nd Team All-GLIAC honors as a medalist in this this year's championship.

Petermann had an initial provisional qualifying mark of 52.22m at the GVSU Al Owens Invitational on April 21st, but helped solidify his spot in the national championships with his toss in the GLIAC Championships. Petermann was ranked 8th in the Discus Throw in the Midwest Region and 15th nationally going into the championships.

Petermann boasts a 3.65 GPA and is a software engineering major. He has been a GLIAC Academic All-Excellence honoree in 2014,15,16, and now 17. Petermann is the second Tech athlete to earn the award during the 2016-17 season after volleyball player Rachel Pohlod secured the honors in the fall.

The five other male student-athletes to receive the award were Alex Nannetti (Grand Valley State), Connor Foley (Northwood), Justin Childers (Ohio Dominican), Kevin Borst (Tiffin), and Austin Szink (Walsh).

The six female student-athletes were Ally Farrah (Ashland), Jenna Lenza (Grand Valley State), Bekah Kastning (Hillsdale), Molly Oren (Hillsdale), Kristen Lucas (Wayne State), and Lyndsay Butler (Wayne State.
