Pahl and Petermann Headed to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Michigan Tech men's outdoor track and field team will have a pair of representatives at the NCAA Division II National Championships May 25-27 held at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Matthew Pahl will compete in the 10,000 Meter Run and Kyle Petermann will take part in the Discus Throw after the qualifiers were announced by the national office on Tuesday.

Pahl, a sophomore distance runner from Canton, Michigan, will be making his first appearance in the NCAA Championships at the end of the month. Pahl recorded a provisional qualifying time in the 10,000 at the Bucknell Bison Invitational on April 15th. His time of 29:53.24 was a new personal best and Michigan Tech school record. He finished 12th in the field that day and in the process outran a number of NCAA Division I and II athletes.

Pahl placed seventh in the finals of the 10,000 at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 31:34.75. He is ranked 6th regionally in the 10,000 and 18th nationally going into the 2017 championships.

Petermann, a senior thrower from Clintonville, Wisconsin, will be making is second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2017, finishing 14th at the national meet in the Discus Throw a year ago. Petermann turned in his best performance of the 2017 season at the GLIAC Championships earlier this month. Petermann's throw covered a distance of 52.83m which also generated eight points in the team standings for Michigan Tech. By virtue of his second place performance, Petermann earned 2nd Team All-GLIAC honors as a medalist in this this year's championship.

Petermann had an initial provisional qualifying mark of 52.22m at the GVSU Al Owens Invitational on April 21st, but helped solidify his spot in the national championships with his toss in the GLIAC Championships. Petermann is ranked 8th in the Discus Throw in the Midwest Region and 15th nationally.

"Being selected to the National Championships is a tremendous accomplishment for Matt and Kyle, along with our program," Michigan Tech Head Coach Jake Isaacson said. "Kyle will be making his second consecutive trip to the National meet, while Matt is making his first. Both of these young men have provided us with leadership and excellence along with their great performances, and they will represent Michigan Tech proudly down in Florida."
