Huskies Wrap Up Day 2 at GLIAC Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track and field teams both completed the second day of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Thursday night. The Huskies competed in the finals of nine events and multiple preliminaries with more finals scheduled for Friday.

Michigan Tech had two athletes compete in the Men's Decathlon which opened on Wednesday and concluded Thursday. Zach Klassen ended the event with a fourth place finish in the final standings thanks to 6,207 points. Teammate Gabriel Wykle posted a sixth place finish with 5,652 points.

Klassen had strong performances throughout the meet, especially in the field portions of the decathlon. Klassen took first place in the Pole Vault (4.30m) and Discus Throw (35.42m) while grabbing second place in the Javelin Throw (47.74m).

In the men's 10,000 Meter Run, Matt Pahl claimed a team best seventh place in the individual standings with a time of 31:34.75. Daniel Kulas covered the distance in 32:34.64 and ended the event in the No. 17 spot. Marcus Shamberg also competed in the 10,000 on Thursday and finished 25th with a time of 34:51.51.

Ethan Norstog and Nate Carey both brought home top ten finishes in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase for the Huskies. Norstog was ninth in the final standings with a time of 9:50.62 followed by Carey who checked in at No. 10 with a time of 9:53.49. The results placed both runners in the top half of a very competitive field.

Chad Brown closed the competition on Thursday for the men in the Long Jump. Brown turned in a mark of 5.92m and finished in 15th place in the individual standings.

The Tech women had multiple top ten performances in both the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase and the 10,000 Meter Run. Robyn Holmes got the Huskies rolling by hitting the line in seventh place during the 3000 Meter Steeplechase thanks to a time of 11:54.94. Carly Huggins wasn't far behind with the freshman claiming ninth place (12:14.74) to get into the top ten. Cassie Gietek also competed for Tech in the Steeplechase and just missed the top ten with a spot in the final standings at No. 11 (12:39.33).

Sophia Farquhar guided the Huskies in the 10,000 Meter Run with a time of 38:09.83 leading to a seventh place result. Emily Vigil also made her way into the top ten at No. 10 after crossing the line in 39:19.25.

In field events for the Tech women, Alyssa Smith finished 15th in the Javelin throw with a toss of 28.52m. Aimee Allen then tied for 13th in the long jump with Marlecia Holston of Ashland with each athlete recording a mark of 5.22m.

The Huskies will close the 2017 GLIAC Championships on Friday at Grand Valley State. The men own five points in the team standings while the women have four points going into the final day.
