Huskies Post Pair of Top Three Team Finishes at St. Norbert
DE PERE, Wis. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's track and field team competed on Thursday night at the St. Norbert Twilight Meet. The men took home second place (127 points) and the women claimed third (72 points) to continue their solid starts to the 2016-17 season.
Chase Scheel kicked things off in the 3000 Meter Run for the Tech men by placing in the top half of the field at No. 5. Scheel covered the distance in a time of 9:28.53 to garner five points in the team standings. Only five runners competed in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, but Ethan Norstog came out on top for the Huskies thanks to a time of 10:07.57. Norstog was 38 seconds in front of the closest runner.
In the 110 Meter Hurdles, the Huskies had three of the top four finishers on Thursday night. Jacob Jarvis crossed the line in first place with a time of 15.76 followed by teammate Larry Lamb in second place at 16.17 seconds. Gabriel Wykle checked in at No. 4 with a time of 16.51.
Jarvis was once again the top finisher in the 100 Meter Dash for the Huskies, landing in fifth in the field of 17 competitors with a time of 11.33 seconds. Korson Mundinger was right behind Jarivs in sixth at 11.37 seconds. John Bailey powered the Huskies in the 400 Meter Dash with a seventh place finish thanks to a time of 51.78 while Justin Mentink (9th, 52.58) and Zach Westphal (10th, 52.72) each posted top ten results.
Corey Zeutzius carried home third place in the 800 Meter Run on the strength of 1:58.83 burst, leaving him just over two seconds off the first place pace. Gage Armstrong grabbed the top spot in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a recorded time of 57.75 seconds, earning 10 points in the team standings.
The Huskies took both second and third in the 4x400 Meter Relay on Thursday night. The "A' team covered the distance in a time of 3:35.56 while the "B" team sprint across the line in 3:39.90.
Turning the page to field events, Gabriel Wykle broke the top ten (10th) in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.80m. James Huey was fifth in the Triple Jump with a mark of 12.73m and in the Discus throw Kyle Petermann placed second with a toss of 50.58m. Petermann followed that up with a fourth place finish in the Shot Put (13.83m) and Noah Dobrzelewski took fifth place with a throw of 12.89m. Jacob Evilsizer was seventh in the Hammer throw due to a mark of 33.50m.
The Tech women got the meet rolling with a win in the 4x100 Meter Relay, edging Northern Michigan for the top spot with a time of 48.39 seconds. Robyn Holmes was third in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase (12:13.22) and Carly Huggins logged fifth place in the event after turning in a time of 12:30.17.
Kassity Swanson kicked off the sprinting events for Tech with a fifth place run in the 100 Meter Dash, hitting the line in 13.28 seconds. Gabrielle Hummel was eighth at 13.55 seconds. Kassity Swanson was eighth in the 200 Meter Dash (28.07 seconds0 and in the 400 Meter Dash, Lauren Tetzloff generated six team points with a third place time of 58.99 seconds.
Julia Manzano earned the No. 8 spot out of 28 athletes in the 800 Meter Run, crossing the finish line in 2:29.34. The top spot in the standings of the 400 Meter Hurdles went to Ashley Veale as she outpaced the field of 12 runners with a time of 63.70, thus earning 10 points for the Huskies in the team standings.
The Tech women landed in second place in the 4x400 Meter Relay to wrap up the track portion of the meet. The Huskies checked in with an official time of 4:08.86.
Aimee Allen highlighted the night for Tech in the field events, finishing second in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.24m. Emma Witherspoon had a strong showing in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 2.75m for third place. Haylie Helbig rounded out the night for Tech with a top ten performance in the Javelin Throw. Helbig recorded a toss of 26.70m to finish in ninth place.
The next team event for both the men and women will be at the Al Owens Invitational in Allendale, Michigan on April 21st and 22nd.
