Lane Earns Academic All-America, Commissioner's Award

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Jani Lane (Anchorage, Alaska) has earned two more awards for his athletic and academic prowess for the 2015 Michigan Tech track team. The senior was this week named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team in addition to receiving the GLIAC Commissioner's Award.

Lane posted the nation's 10th-best regular season time in the 1,500 meters to qualify for his second consecutive NCAA Division II Track and Field Championship. The senior, who holds Tech's school record and eight of the top 10 times in the 1,500, was an All-American in 2014 by placing seventh at the NCAA Championship. Lane garnered the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award for having the highest GPA of the roughly 400 student-athletes at the 2015 NCAA Championship site. He placed fourth at this year's GLIAC Championships and boasts a GPA of 3.94 in mechanical engineering.

Lane's Academic All-America award encompasses all Division II men in the nation from the sports of track and cross country. Only 46 of the thousands of those athletes were honored with Academic All-America status. Nominees must have completed at least one year at their current institution and possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.

For GLIAC Commissioner's Awards, the league selects 12 athletes (six men and six women) from each season (fall, winter and spring) who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play.
