Huskies Eclipse Two More Records As Track Regular Season Ends

RESULTS: GVSU Friday | GVSU Saturday | North Central | Allegheny

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Two more school records fell as Michigan Tech track and field wrapped up its regular season at various last chance meets Friday and Saturday (May 8-9).

Deedra Irwin ran the 1,500 meters at the North Central College Invitational. She turned in a time of 4:35.22 to break Andrea Metz's 2008 school record of 4:38.33 by more than three seconds. With the NCAA provisional mark being 4:34.73, Irwin just missed by six-tenths of a second.

At the Grand Valley State Last Chance Meet,  Erika Poli improved her own school record in the pole vault by clearing 11-6.5—two inches higher than her school-record-breaking effort at GVSU three weeks earlier.

Other athletes competing at GVSU were Casey Buckner and Kyle Petermann. Buckner again increased his personal best in the javelin by posting a throw of 171-8 for the seventh-best effort in school history. Petermann had a discus mark of 159-4 for the fifth-best mark in Tech annals.

Back at North Central, Jani Lane and Bradon Kampstra both ran on Friday. Lane, who already owns a top-10 national qualifying time in the 1,500, tried to hit an NCAA provisional mark in the 800. He went out very fast but was unable to sustain it, clocking in at 2:03.67. Kampstra ran the 3,000 steeplechase, posting a 9:59.54 time.

The only other athlete in action over the weekend was Sean Pengelly, who raced the 5,000 meters at Allegheny College. Pengelly, who already owns the school record in that event, was a little off his pace with a 14:52.10.

"It appears that Jani will be our only Michigan Tech athlete at NCAA Nationals," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "We had a lot of good performances throughout the season. I'm really proud of Deedra, Erika and Casey for finishing the year with personal bests. You can't ask for better than that."

Grand Valley State will host the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 20-23.
