Lane Runs Provisional Time, Two More Records Fall

RESULTS: Al Owens Invitational Day 2

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Jani Lane provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1,500, two school records fell and 12 performances worthy of Michigan Tech's all-time top 10 highlighted day two of the Al Owens Invitational at Grand Valley State.

Lane ran a 3:48.89 for the third-fastest time in school history and defeated the field of 90 entrants in the event by six seconds. The 2014 All-American in the 1,500 owns each of the top four times in the Tech record book including the record of 3:46.53.

The two school records came on the women's side. Jamie Dompier posted a 25.64 in the 200 meters to best her own record of 25.65. She finished eighth overall in that event. She also clocked a 12.63 in the 100 meters for the sixth-best mark in Tech annals.

Erika Poli raised her own school record in the pole vault by nearly five inches as she cleared 11-4.5. She was 13th in a stacked event that saw seven athletes post NCAA provisional marks.

Lauren Raiford joined Lane as an event winner. She completed the 400 meters in 57.92—just four hundredths off her own school record.

In the long jump, Aimee Allen had a leap of 17-9.75 which was good for sixth place at the meet and fifth all-time in Tech history.

Dompier, Raiford and Allen were joined by Liz Bloch in the 4x400 meter relay. They posted a 4:02.14 for a fifth-place finish and the fourth-best time at Tech.

Deedra Irwin and Jenna Burns also had top-10 results. Irwin had the fifth-best 1,500 meters in school history with a 4:42.81 clocking. Burns threw the shot put 39-7.25 to match the seventh-best Huskies mark.

Jevon Maddox posted a pair of top-four finishes with a third place result in the 200 meters (22.25) and a fourth-place showing in the 400 meters (48.94). His 400 time tied for the fifth best in school history.

Pole vaulters Jake Jurkowski and Zachary Klassen both cleared 14-6.25. Only seven performances in Tech history have been better. Jurkowski just missed on an attempt at 15-3 that would have been the second-best ever.

Other men's team members who scored points in the meet: Jason Saliga (eighth in the 1,500 at 4:00.34), Shane McGrath (seventh in the 400 hurdles in 55.31), Derek Brandt in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (seventh in 10:11.55), James Sutton (tied for fifth in the high jump at 6-5) and Casey Buckner (eighth in the long jump at 20-9).

"The teams did well today," said Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller. "Pretty nice weather allowed us to have some good performances.

"Jani's time gives him a really solid chanced to make the NCAA field, which is exciting.

"We enjoy coming to Grand Valley. It's a fast track plus really good competition."

The Tech men finished eighth of 18 colleges in the final standings while the women were 11th of 16.

The next scheduled event for the track teams is the GLIAC Championships at Hillsdale on Apr. 29-May 1.
