Huskies Honored by USTFCCCA for Academics

NEW ORLEANS – The Michigan Tech track and field team had three student-athletes earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments, during the 2014 season. Alongside the recognition, both the men's and women's squads were named USTFCCA All-Academic Teams.

"I'm proud of track and field program," coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "All the athletes put a lot of hard work in the classroom and have to deal with a difficult schedule, as far as travel, but still get the job done."

All-American Jani Lane has a 3.92 GPA in mechanical engineering, and holds the school record in the 1500-meter run. He also has a top 10 mark in the 800 and finished seventh in the 1500 at the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May.

Kyle Petermann holds the school record in the discus and owns seven of the top 10 marks in the event. He has a 3.68 GPA in software engineering and threw an NCAA provisionally qualifying mark of 163-feet, 10-inches at the GLIAC Championships, finishing seventh.

Jason Saliga ran a provisional time in the 3,000 steeplechase at the GLIAC Championships. He finished fourth in the event in 9:22.88, and has a 3.82 GPA in chemical engineering.

"Jani had a phenomenal season and capped it off at NCAAs," added Haggenmiller. "Jason and Kyle both made the provisional list in their first year and set themselves up for a good year of training to come back better and get an automatic qualifying mark next season."

A total of 241 men from 73 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.

A total of 105 women's teams and 50 men's teams earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Tech women's team holds a 3.46 GPA while the men combined for a 3.31.
