Huskies Break Four Records Over the Weekend
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech track and field teams had student-athletes competing at the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Mich., and the Drake Alternative in Whitewater, Wis., over the weekend. The Huskies broke four school records in the final competitions before the GLIAC Championships.
"It was a good weekend for us," Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "It was exciting to see some school records fall, and I feel we're in a good place heading into the conference championships next weekend.
"Our distance guys ran well down in Hillsdale on Thursday and Friday. We had some good performances down in Wisconsin today, despite some difficult conditions with a wind and cool temperatures."
Sean Pengelly broke school record in the 10K on Friday at the Gina Relays with a time of 31:01.48. He finished 20th in the race.
On Saturday in Wisconsin, Jamie Dompier broke her own school record in the 200, finishing second with a time of 25.78. She was also second in the 400 with the fifth fastest time in school history in 59.94 seconds.
Competing in the 400 hurdles for the first time, Ashley Veale broke the school record by almost 2.5 seconds. She crossed the line in 1:05.37 and was also seventh in the 100 hurdles (15.93).
Kyle Petermann broke his old record in the discus with a toss of 159-feet, 7-inches to place third.
Other notable marks on the women's side were Deedra Irwin (4:54.01) finishing third in the 1500. Carly Joseph (23:02.75) had a fifth place finish in the 5K, while Nicole Wehner (2:30.40) placed 10th in the 800.
Erika Poli finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 10-2.75. Hannah Schnack (14-6.5) was eighth in the long jump
Natalie Berryman finished sixth in the discus (126-11), seventh in the javelin (92-10) and 10th in the shot put (38-6.75).
The men had two individual wins and two relay wins at the Drake Alternative. Isaac Pringle won the 400 in 49.89 seconds and was eighth in the 200 (22.53). Brent Cousino (16.94) was seventh in the 110 hurdles
Mike Fisher (6-5) won the high jump with James Sutton (6-2.75) in third and Patrick Spalding (5-10.75) in eighth.
Huskies also littered the pole vault field with Spalding (14-5.5) leading the pack in third place. Jake Wiedemeier (5th/13-11.75) and Jake Jurkowski (6th/13-11.75) were also in the top 10.
Benjamin Kramka (1:57.53) finished fifth in the 800. Corey Zeutzius (1:57.90) was two spots back, while Mike Tuski (2:00.30) was 10th in the same event. Kyle Hanson (4:09.01) placed eighth in the 1500.
Steven Saliga (166-5) had a third place throw in the javelin with Matthew Vander Velden (145-4) 10th in the event.
The two men's relay teams came out on top. The 4x100 relay team won by over a second with a time of 44.75. Representing the Black and Gold was Brian Fisk, Chrispin Johnston, Cousino and Spalding. The 4x400 (3:31.14) squad won by over 10 seconds with Tuski, Pringle, Kramka and Cousino racing for the Huskies.
The GLIAC Championships are hosted by Lake Erie College from Apr. 30-May 2. The meet will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
