Tech Nordic Skiing Announces Team Awards
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski team awards were announced at the inaugural postseason Skimeister Race at Mt. Ripley followed by a team banquet potluck and volunteer appreciation party.
Reid Goble – Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Skier (Men's Team)
Reid Goble, a freshman from Harbor Springs, Michigan, secured First Team All-Conference honors by placing in the top ten in every central region collegiate race this season. He won the first CCSA race of the season in the 15K skate individual start race at the 2018 U.S. Cross Country Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. He followed this with a ninth-place finish at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in the junior classic race. Reid qualified and represented the team at the 2018 NCAA Skiing Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Gaspard Cuenot – Most Outstanding Skier Award (Men's Team)
Gaspard Cuenot, a junior native to Le Cerneaux-Pequignot, Switzerland, was awarded most outstanding skier for the 2017-18 season for his top team finish of 21st place at the NCAA Championships in the 10K classic individual start race. He also posted back-to-back individual conference race wins, including the conference championship title in the 20K skate mass start race in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
Gabriel Pfeiffer – Scholastic Achievement Award (Men's Team)
Gabriel Pfeiffer, a freshman from St.Paul, Minnesota, received the scholastic achievement award through his academic excellence in achieving a 4.0 in chemical engineering through his freshman season.
Olav Vestol – Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award (Men's Team)
Freshman Olav Vestol was awarded the inaugural Harold Meese Sportsmanship award through his exemplary team leadership, camaraderie, and selfless commitment. As an exchange student-athlete from the Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway, Olav is unfortunately only with Tech for one season and will be returning to NTNU to complete his graduate degree in civil engineering.
Erin Lipp – Most Improved Skier (Women's Team)
Erin Lipp, a junior from Traverse City, Michigan, was key to the women's team success this season by improving on her previous season's results every weekend of competition, with a highlight top 15 finish at the Central Region Championships in Ishpeming, Michigan. She recorded the best overall result of her career at our home CCSA race in the 15K skate mass start race fishing in 11th place.
Amanda Kautzer – Scholastic Achievement Award (Women's Team)
Amanda Kautzer, a sophomore hailing from Plymouth, Minnesota, earned the scholastic achievement award by achieving a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a dual major in mechanical and biomedical engineering. She was also named a USCSA Academic All-American this season and qualified and represented the team at the 2018 NCAA Skiing Championships.
Sarah Goble – Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award, Rookie of the Year, and Most Outstanding Skier Award (Women's Team)
Sarah Goble, a freshman from Harbor Springs, Michigan, was a leader this season through her consistency as the top performer for the Women's Nordic Skiing team. Goble earned First Team All-Conference honors, posted top ten performances in all CCSA races with a highlight fourth-place finish in the 15K skate mass start race at Tech, and qualified and represented the team at the 2018 NCAA Skiing Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
