ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Michigan Tech's Deedra Irwin competed in her first race at the U23 World Skiing Championships today. She finished 31st in the classic sprint qualifier.

Irwin completed the 1.3 kilometer course in 3:55.70, missing out on the top 30 and a spot in the heats by half of one second.  The Huskies' senior was the second fastest of the four Americans representing Team USA at the event.

Two Tech skiers are in Kazakhstan for the World Junior Championship. Tom Bye will take part in his first event tomorrow (Feb. 4)—a 10K freestyle race. Irwin is scheduled to race again in the skiathlon, a freestyle/classic hybrid, on Feb. 7.
