Flanders Wins Freestyle at UP Duals

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Alice Flanders won the women's five-kilometer freestyle today as Michigan Tech hosted Northern Michigan for  the UP Duals at the Nordic Training Center today. Small fields of 22 women and 19 men took to the trails for the first races in Houghton this season.

Flanders covered the 5K course in 13:56 to win by four seconds. Teammate Anna Kubek finished in seventh place with a 14:34. Deedra Irwin was six seconds back in eighth.

Northern Michigan's Kyle Bratrud won the men's 10K in 24:23. Tech's first finisher was Thomas Bye in fifth place with a time of 25:21. The next two Huskies were Kyle Hanson (ninth, 26:31) and Thomas Kendrick (13th, 27:36).

"Alice had a good race to start the home season," said Tech assistant coach Andrew Joda. "I think we had decent results today considering we're coming off a full week of training at altitude."
