Axelsson Finishes Second in Classic Sprint at Junior Nationals

STOWE, Vt. – The six Michigan Tech Nordic skiers who are the 2014 USSA Junior National Cross Country Ski Championships skied the 1.4-kilometer classic sprint races on Wednesday (March 5). Ulrika Axelsson was again the top skier for the Huskies with a second place finish.

Axelsson won her quarterfinal and semifinal heats to advance to the championship.

"It was another great day for Ulrika," Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "It's so good for her to be gaining all this experience here in the US after joining our team in January."

On the men's side, Kyle Hanson was unable to advance out of his quarterfinal heat, finishing third.

"Kyle ended up in a very competitive heat and gave it his all today," added Haggenmiller.

Carolyn Lucca and Sonja Hedblom also raced for the Huskies in the women's sprint while Scott Pederson and Logan Brueck rounded out men skiers for the Black and Gold.

"The crew looks forward to getting after the mass start freestyle event on Friday," Haggenmiller said.
