Skiers Dominate Sprint Races To Wrap Up Weekend

COLERAINE, Minn. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski team finished its weekend with the sprint races on Sunday (Jan. 26) at the Mt. Itasca CCSA Invite. The Huskies once again dealt with bitter cold temperatures but had seven podium finishes.

The Huskies swept the senior women's race as Lisa Koenig edged out teammates Lynn Duijndam and Ruth Oppliger. Sam Holmes won the senior men's race and Tech's waxing technician Mike Flemming added a third place finish.

Ulrika Axelsson won the A final of the women's junior bracket. She swept all three of her heats. Sonja Hedblom finished sixth in the bracket after finishing second to Axelsson in the semifinal.

Kyle Hanson had a third place finish in the men's junior bracket A final. He won his qualifying heat and finished second in the semifinal.

"The team persevered through some tough weather conditions today," Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "We had some fun today and it was cool to see Mike get on the course and show his talents after how hard he works in the wax room."

Tech now has a week off to prepare for the CCSA Championships on Feb. 8-9 at Al Quaal in Ishpeming.
