Skiers Place Third at Telemark Chase After Classic Races

CABLE, Wis. – The Michigan Tech Nordic ski team finished third overall on the weekend at the Telemark Chase event. On Sunday (Jan. 19), the Huskies skied the classic races. Matt Wong and Deedra Irwin both had top 10 finishes for the Huskies.

Wong placed eighth overall in the 10-kilometer classic in 28:04.8. Jay Woodbeck (13th/28:48), Kyle Hanson (15th/28:56.7) and Matt Dugan (16th/28:59.8) were also in the top 20.

"Matt Wong had a really solid day today," Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "He was skiing with some elite skiers and was about 15 seconds behind one of the better skiers from US Nationals.

"Jay continues to have a good start to the season, and Kyle also had a good day out there."

Sam Holmes (45th) and David Joda (51st) rounded out Huskies in the men's race.

Deedra Irwin placed 10th overall in the 5K classic. She crossed the line in 17:08.3. Alice Flanders (17:25.7) was five spots back in 15th.

"Deedra and Alice both skied well to lead the women's team," added Haggenmiller. "The women didn't have quite the day we did yesterday—when we beat Northern—but everyone competed hard."

Lisa Koenig (23rd), Lynn Duijndam (25th), Sarah Daniels (27th), Ulrika Axelsson (29th), Rachel Mason (29th), Ruth Oppliger (80th) and Erin Mathews (110th) also skied in the women's race.

Next weekend (Jan. 24-26), the Huskies travel to the Mt. Itasca CCSA Invite.
