Flanders Wins Freestyle at Telemark Chase

CABLE, Wis.Alice Flanders, of the Michigan Tech Nordic ski team, won the 10-kilometer freestyle at the Telemark Chase race on Saturday (Jan. 18). She finished in 30:19.8 and won the race by over 16 seconds.

"Alice was flying today," Tech coach Joe Haggenmiller said. " She had an awesome day and I'm very proud of her."

Deedra Irwin also had a top 10 finish in ninth place. She was 48 second behind Flanders in 31:08. Lynn Duijndam (13th/31:43.6) and Sarah Daniels (17th/32:10) also had top 20 finishes for the Huskies.

"Deedra also raced well today," added Haggenmiller. "We have a real deep group of women and it was an exciting day for the group."

Lisa Koenig (24th), Rachel Mason (45th), Ulrika Axelsson (68th), Ruth Oppliger (80th) and Erin Mathews (92nd) rounded out Tech skiers in the women's 10K

Four Huskies were in the top 15 in the men's 15K race. Matt Dugan led the group with a 10th place finish in 40:00.9. Matt Wong (40:01.6) was two spots and less than a second back. Jay Woodbeck (40:06.8) and Kyle Hanson (40:15.) finished 14th and 15th.

David Joda (34th) and Sam Holmes (54th) rounded out Huskies in the men's race.

"The men were out there battling hard today," said Haggenmiller. "It was a really nice course but definitely offered its challenges.

"It was a good day for the Huskies all around and we look forward to the classic races on Sunday."
