Huskies conclude ITA Tournament in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Michigan Tech men's tennis finished doubles play in the men's ITA Midwest Region Tournament Monday, concluding three days of individual bracket play. The Huskies sent six athletes, all of whom competed in both singles and doubles competition, which is single elimination and hosted by University of Indianapolis.

"We're making progress," said head coach Kristin Yep. "I felt we showed up and competed well. Even in matches we lost; we didn't beat ourselves. We gained some valuable experience this weekend." 

MEN'S A SINGLES BRACKET

  • Senior Vitor Jordao (Recife, Brazil) picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (6) win over Samuele Contesabile (Quincy) in the round of 64 before falling to No. 1 seed Dom Spicer (Wayne State) 6-1, 6-0 in round two. Spicer would go on to make the semifinals.
  • Junior Nikolai Prosyanykov (Santiago, Chile) fell in his first round match against Michael Gurtner (Tiffin) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
  • Mario Aleksic (Maryville) won the tournament with the No. 9 seed over Ruben Fonga (Tiffin).

 MEN'S B SINGLES BRACKET

  • Junior Leon Sell (Neuenburg, Germany) won his first match in a Husky uniform Saturday 6-1, 6-2 over Oliwer Wierzbicki (Lewis). Later in the day, Sell split sets with No. 10 seed Pedro Romano Franca, but lost in super tiebreaker for the third 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
  • Sophomore Adam Fenjiro (Rabat, Morocco) took a set off Alfredo Berlanga (Findlay) before exiting 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 in round the round of 64.

 MEN'S C SINGLES BRACKET

  • Junior Ambarish Rao (Irvine, California) dismissed Gabriel Seminario (Ashland) in a super tiebreaker 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 before bowing out to Lukas Kohler (Walsh) 6-3, 6-0.
  • With the No. 2 seed in the draw, junior Ricardo Nunez (Ciudad, del Carmen, Mexico) grabbed straight set wins over Bogdan Janicijevic (Hillsdale) and Omar Prince (Purdue Northwest). He lost to Ivan Mimica (Quincy) 6-1, 6-3 the following afternoon in the quarterfinals.

 MEN'S A DOUBLES BRACKET

  • Jordao and Sell teamed to face Josef Truhlar and Louis Keiner (Rockhurst) but fell 8-5 in round one.
  • No. 2 seed Edgar Destouet and Tom Niklas Zeuch (Indianapolis) took the doubles title.

 MEN'S B DOUBLES BRACKET

  • Up against the No. 1 seeded Andrew Swirczek and Alexander-Yannic Mader (Ferris State) in the opening round, Prosyanykov and Fenjiro lost 8-6.

 MEN'S C DOUBLES BRACKET

  • Nunez and Rao prevailed against Bernard Anderson and Carlos Henriquez (Davenport) but came up short against No. 1 seeds Axel Sabourin and David Julia in the quarterfinals.

 Michigan Tech men's tennis plays again this fall at the Ashland University Doubles Invitational on Friday, September 30 in Ohio.
