Huskies Power Past Shepherd University
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Michigan Tech men's tennis team picked up a 6-1 non-conference victory over Shepherd University Wednesday on the third day of competition at the Spring Tennis Fest held in Hilton Head, South Carolina. It's been a good trip so far for the Huskies who have logged two wins in three matches over spring break.
Michigan Tech (2-4) earned the all-important doubles point on Wednesday to get the match rolling in the right direction. Senior Mario Neto and freshman Siddhesh Mahadeshwar put together a late charge to topple Carter Davis and Evan Dokken 6-3 in No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Nico Caviglia and sophomore Ignacio Carbajosa engineered a solid performance in No. 2 doubles, cruising past Kaleb Lochner and Nicholas Ferony of Shepherd 6-2 to clinch the doubles point. Senior Juan Felipe Chica and freshman Nathan Sodini were penciled in to the No. 3 spot in the doubles lineup, but Shepherd (0-3) was unable to field a third doubles pair.
Shepherd managed to get just one point in singles with Carter Davis edging Neto in the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-3. The Huskies swept the rest of the points from the Rams, claiming wins in the No. 2 through No. 6 positions in the lineup. Caviglia recorded a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in No. 2 singles against Evan Dokken while Carbajosa accelerated past Kaleb Lochner 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.
The bottom half of the lineup came through once again for the Huskies as it did in Sunday's win over Kutztown. Mahadeshwar picked up his second collegiate singles win by defeating Nicholas Ferony 6-0. 6-1 in No. 4 singles while Felipe Chica upended Ryan Cox 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles. Sodini was scheduled to compete in No. 6 singles, but the Rams were not able to field a player at that spot in the lineup.
The Huskies will be back on the court Friday morning to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis in their final match at the Spring Tennis Fest. The first serve is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. eastern time.
