Huskies Fall to Lake Superior State Saturday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's tennis team fell 7-2 in their home opener Saturday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Lake Superior State University at the Gates Tennis Center.

The Huskies turned in a couple of solid individual performances, led by Mario Neto who notched wins in both doubles and singles competition in the contest. Neto teamed up with Ignacio Carbajos to defeat Ieuan Lister and Diego Penz of Lake Superior State (6-6, 1-3 GLIAC) 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Simon Xiong and Nico Caviglia nearly garnered a second doubles point, but came up just short 8-6 to Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama.

Neto collected Michigan Tech's (0-8, 0-4 GLIAC) other point in Saturday's match by rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Joe Giman in No. 1 singles. In the process, Neto locked up his fourth singles win of the season and second victory in doubles portions of matches this season.

Caviglia had a hard fought match against Jake Prime in No. 2 singles before falling by a final count of 6-4, 6-2. Illiya Chibirev also competed hard in his singles set at the No. 6 spot before coming up just short 6-4, 6-1.

The Huskies will be back on the court Saturday April 7th when they host Purdue Northwest in another GLIAC match at 10 a.m. The Huskies will then take on Davenport at the Gates Tennis Center Sunday April 8th at 10 a.m.
