Men's Tennis Opens with 7-2 Win vs. St. Cloud

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men's tennis team opened its 2014 spring season with a 7-2 victory over St. Cloud State tonight at Gates Tennis Center. The Huskies won five singles points and two doubles points to claim the opener.

Tech held a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Felipe Dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez earned an 8-5 win at the top spot. Built Yumuang and Nick Kremkow swept their No. 3 opponents 8-0.

The Huskies won at each of the top five singles flights to secure the team victory. Dos Santos won a marathon match at No. 1 with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (11) score. At No. 2, Javier Oliveros also need three sets to net the win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Rodriguez claimed a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles, while Yumuang did not surrender a game at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0). Kremkow garnered the seventh team point with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 5.

St. Cloud State won its two points at No. 2 doubles (8-5) and No. 6 singles 3-6, 7-6 (3), 13-11.

Michigan Tech will continue home play  Sunday (Feb. 9) with a 10 a.m. start vs. Lake Superior State.
