Huskies and Bulldogs tie Saturday, Ferris wins shootout

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – No. 14 Michigan Tech skated to a 3-3 tie at Ferris State Saturday at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Bulldogs earned the extra CCHA point with a 2-1 win in the third round of the shootout.
"We got a big goal by Crespi late but weren't able to hang on. It was disappointing," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We had a lot of individual play tonight, and they out-competed and out-worked us."
Tech (16-7-4, 9-5-4 CCHA)never trailed in the game and held three one-goal leads. Logan Pietila broke the ice on the power play with Tech's eighth opportunity of the weekend 14:24 into the first. Nick Nardella faked a shot and slid it down to Pietila who wristed in his sixth goal of the season. Kash Rasmussen was also credited with an assist on Logan's 27th career goal.
FSU (10-11-3, 7-7-2 CCHA) tied the game 8:43 into the second on a goal by Connor McGrath as he jammed it in at the side of the net. Tyler Schleppe and Mitch Deelstra assisted on the play.
Logan Pietila scored his second of the night 14:18 into the second to regain the lead. Ryland Mosley found Logan in the slot and a quick shot on the ice got through for his seventh of the season. Brett Thorne added the second assist.
The Bulldogs again tied it 5:45 into the third when Jason Brancheau scored from Blake Evennou and Stepan Pokorny.
Jake Crespi put the Black and Gold back on top with 6:34 remaining as he took the puck the full length of the ice and fired top shelf for his fourth of the season.
Ferris kept fighting and pulled its goaltender for the extra attacker. Jason Brancheau tied the game with 1:22 left in regulation.
Tech had a couple of great chances in the final moments of regulation and then had a 3-on-1 in overtime that they couldn't capitalize on.
Stepan Pokorny scored in the first round and Antonio Venuto sealed the shootout win in the third. Logan Pietila scored in the second round for Tech while Tristan Ashbrook and Nick Nardella were unsuccessful in their attempts.
FSU led in shots 30-26. Blake Pietila made 27 saves and Logan Sten stopped 23 shots for the home team.
Tech was 1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies return home to host Northern Michigan Friday at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The teams will wrap up the weekend and season series in Marquette Saturday. There will be 1,000 7th man T-shirts handed out at Friday's game sponsored by Holiday Inn Express.
