Tech wins 3-2 at Ferris State Friday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Michigan Tech defeated Ferris State 3-2 Friday (Feb. 14) at Ewigleben Ice Arena to win its 17th game of the season. Keegan Ford, Raymond Brice, and Tommy Parrottino scored the goals and Matt Jurusik made 31 saves as the Huskies improved to 17-14-3 overall and 12-11-2 in the WCHA.

"I'm very happy with the win and proud of the guys. These were three big points," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "This is a hard rink to play in with the tight corners, but our third period was our best period."

Tied at one entering the third period, Raymond Brice scored 2:25 in to put the Huskies back in front. He caught a pass in the slot from Logan Ganie, kicked the puck up to his stick, and jammed in his sixth of the season and 13th of his career.

Tommy Parrottino added to the lead late in the period with a backhand tip after a pass from the corner by Trenton Bliss. It was Parrottino's ninth of the season and 15th of his career with Logan Pietila adding the second assist on a one-touch dump in to Bliss.

The Bulldogs cut it back to a one-goal game 61 seconds later when Marshal Moise scored with 2:48 remaining in the third.

FSU then got a power play with 1:41 remaining and pulled the goaltender for the sixth skater with a minute left. Matt Jurusik made a great save closing his legs on the puck before it crossed the line with 42 seconds left and got help from his teammates with blocks by Bliss, Pietila, and Ford in the final minute.

"Matt was outstanding in goal tonight and had a great bounce-back game," added Shawhan. "He answered the challenge and was our pick for player of the game."

Keegan Ford opened scoring to give the Huskies the lead on their fourth power play of the game and third of the second period 12:21 after the first intermission. He took a long shot from the point that deflected out front and in for his second of the season and fifth of his career from Colin Swoyer and Brenden Datema. It was Datema's first collegiate point.

The Bulldogs (7-21-2, 5-16-2 WCHA) quickly tied it up only 1:24 later on a goal by Connor Fedorek.

FSU outshot Tech 33-18 in the game, including a 14-4 advantage in the first period. Roni Salmenkangas had 15 saves for the home team. Parker Saretsky hit the crossbar behind him late in the first, and Brian Halonen hit the post on a long shot late in the final seconds of the second.

Each team was whistled for five minor penalties. Tech was 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Tech will play its final Saturday (Feb. 15) road game with a 6:07 p.m. puck drop. It will be the fourth meeting between the Huskies and Bulldogs.
