Huskies tie BSU Saturday, Beavers earn extra WCHA point

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 19-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Bemidji State Saturday (Jan. 18). The Beavers scored 2:34 into the 3-on-3 double overtime period to earn the extra WCHA point at the Sanford Center.

"A lot of guys played very well tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We competed much harder and limited their scoring chances."

Alec Broetzman gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead 17:11 into the first period, scoring his team-leading 12th of the season and second on the weekend. He cleaned up a rebound after a shot by Tyler Rockwell. Logan Ganie added the second assist.

BSU (13-7-4, 13-3-2-1 WCHA) tied it up 2:00 into the second period on a goal by Charlie Combs. Alex Ierullo and Brad Johnson assisted.

Broetzman finished with four shots on goal and had a great chance at a go-ahead goal late in the third period.

Tech had other chances in the first period when TJ Polglaze went in on a shorthanded breakaway but had his shot turned aside. Tommy Parrottino was alone at the side of the net later in the period but hit the post.

Colin Swoyer had an open shot at the end of regulation but a defenseman tipped it over the net. The puck came back out front, but the Bemidji defense scrambled to cover the puck before the final horn sounded.

Adam Brady scored from Tommy Muck on a 2-on-1 to clinch the extra point on the 3-on-3.

"It was a bad turnover by us and should've never occurred," Shawhan said. "We made a bad decision on a line change."

Tech (13-11-3, 8-8-2 WCHA) led in shots 23-19. Matt Jurusik had 18 saves. Zach Driscoll stopped 22 shots for the Beavers.

Each team was only whistled for one minor penalty.

"Everybody is good from here on out," added Shawhan. "Every game is going to be tough. It doesn't matter who we play. We have a lot of work to do to get better."

The Huskies will return home next weekend (Jan. 24-25) for their final home series of the month, hosting Ferris State. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 6:07 p.m. Saturday. There will be Skate with the Huskies following Saturday's game.
