Tech falls 4-1 at Bemidji State Friday

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 19-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-1 at Bemidji State Friday (Jan. 17). The Beavers hopped out to a 4-0 lead before Alec Broetzman scored on the power play late in the third.

"I didn't like our compete level at all," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We have to find our game again. We have to do it one guy at a time and get back to the basics."

BSU (13-7-3, 13-3-1 WCHA) scored twice in a 5:00 span in the first period to take a two-goal lead. Alex Ierullo was alone in front of the net and Owen Sillinger found him from the corner for a goal 12:38 into the game.

The Beavers were then called for a pair of penalties and the Huskies had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:10. Tech took six shots with two getting to the net, one hitting the pipe, one was blocked, and one wide.

After the first penalty expired, Hampus Sjodahl scored a shorthanded goal at 17:11. Brad Johnson assisted.

Adam Brady extended the lead 6:00 into the second with Alex Adams assisting.

Owen Sillinger added a power-play goal 3:34 into the third with a play from behind the net. Tommy Muck and Elias Rosen added assists.

On Tech's seventh power play of the night, Broetzman found the back of the net with 64 seconds left in the game. Alex Smith found Broetzman in the slot and he flipped the puck in backhanded for his team-leading 11th goal of the season and sixth on the power play. Colin Swoyer added the secondary assist.

"Bliss, Pietila, and Parrottino found it as the game went on," added Shawhan. "They didn't spend time in our zone. They had good offensive zone movement and push towards the net. I'm proud of them for that."

Bemidji outshot Tech 33-25. Blake Pietila had 17 saves in the first 26:00. Matt Jurusik stopped 12 shots in the final 32:56.

Tech is now 13-11-2 overall and 8-8-1 WCHA. The two teams play again on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. to wrap up their only meeting this season.
