Huskies fall 4-3 Friday at Alaska

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-3 Friday (Nov. 29) at Alaska. The Huskies twice held the lead but surrendered four goals for the first time this season.

"The better team won tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "It wasn't a pretty hockey game, and our three goals came pretty easy. It was disappointing. We have to get back to the drawing board."

Tech (7-7, 5-6 WCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Trenton Bliss had a rush to the net 37 seconds after the first intermission and snuck in his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Chris Lipe scored his first collegiate goal 28 seconds later for the two-goal lead. A pair of Nanooks crashed into each other to create a two-man breakaway. Greyson Reitmeier carried the puck in the zone and setup Lipe. Parker Saretsky also added an assist.

Alaska (9-8, 7-4 WCHA) got on the board 7:44 into the second on a power-play goal by Didrik Henbrandt on a rebound. Tristan Thompson and James LaDouce added the assists.

Tech had killed off 10 straight opponent power plays before the goal, not allowing a power-play goal since November 8.

The Nanooks tied it up 2:03 into the third period with another power-play tally. They started the possession on a two-man advantage, and Max Newton scored right after the first penalty expired as the puck bounced around and into the back of the net. Brothers Chris Jandric and Steven Jandric assisted on the equalizer.

Keegan Ford put Tech back in front 6:08 into the third with a 4-on-3 power-play goal on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line. His first of the season was assisted by Colin Swoyer and Tommy Parrottino.

Alaska tied it up 85 seconds later on a tally by Caleb Hite. Kyle Marino and Eriks Zohovs were given the assists.

Tristan Thompson scored the game-winner at the 16:27 mark on a shot through traffic. The Huskies couldn't get the puck out of the zone for over 2:00 before Alaska finally capitalized. Justin Young had the assist.

Alaska led in shots 28-18. Michigan Tech's Matt Jurusik made five saves in the first, seven in the second, and 12 in the third.

The Huskies were 1-for-3 on the power play and penalty kill after the two teams combined for nine penalties.

The fourth and final meeting between the Nanooks and Huskies will be at 11:07 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 30) at the Carlson Center.
