Huskies fall Friday to No. 3 Minnesota State

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 3-0 to No. 3 Minnesota State Friday (Nov. 8) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Mavericks scored a pair of goals in the second and added another early in the third period.
"We came out strong and ready to play," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "If we don't score goals nothing else really matters. We only gave up three goals again tonight, but we have to find a way to get three goals ourselves. Our goal is to obviously find some offense, and we'll keep working on it."
Reggie Lutz gave the visitors the lead 6:08 into the second after a sharp-angled shot deflected under Robbie Beydoun. Jack McNeely and Dallas Gerads assisted on the goal.
MSU (7-1-1, 4-1-0 WCHA) added to the lead with a power-play tally by Julian Napravnik after a 5:00 major was called on the Huskies. Marc Michaelis and Connor Mackey were credited with the assists on the tally at 12:16 of the second.
Jared Spooner scored the third goal for the Mavericks with an unassisted tally 61 seconds into the third period.
Shots were tied at 31 on the night. Tech had seven shots in the first, eight in the second, and 16 in the third.
Justin Misiak led the Huskies with four shots on goal. Raymond Brice and Greyson Reitmeier added three shots each.
Beydoun made his third straight start and recorded 22 saves in the first 41:01. Blake Pietila made his first collegiate appearance between the pipes and stopped six shots in the final 18:53.
"I've been looking for a chance to play Blake," added Shawhan. "I'm looking for him to be our future, and I didn't want to put him in a position to fail. He's going to be an outstanding goaltender for us, and he did an excellent job tonight."
The two teams will wrap up their only series of the season at 6:07 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 9).
"I'm proud of our guys and proud of the work ethic," Shawhan said. "We just need to be able to put together a full 60 minutes of good hockey."
