Huskies drop Saturday game at No. 19 LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Michigan Tech fell 3-1 Saturday (Feb. 16) at No. 19 Lake Superior State for the second night in a row. It was a one-goal game late in the third and the Huskies pressured before an empty net goal by the Lakers.

"We played very hard tonight, and I'm proud of the guys," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "When we do start scoring some goals this team will be very fun to watch."

Tech (12-16-4, 11-10-3-1 WCHA) was down 2-0 after the first period. Jake Lucchini brought the Huskies within one when he stepped off the bench, caught a pass from Seamus Donohue, and blasted in his eighth of the season 14:18 into the second.

Tech got some great chances to even it up as the game went on. Dylan Steman created offense in the second period, and Greyson Reitmeier had a shot deflected and trickle to the goal line in the third.

Brian Halonen and Lucchini had chances late in the game and Matt Jurusik was pulled late for the extra attacker. Diego Cuglietta buried his second of the night to seal it for the home team with 1:36 remaining.

"We played them a lot better this weekend than we did down at the GLI," Shawhan added. "Matt was great in net. He gave us a chance. I don't think there's anybody in the country playing better than him right now."

Jurusik finished with 25 saves in his sixth straight start. Shots were 32-28 in favor of the Huskies. Nick Kossoff stopped 31 shots for LSSU.

LSSU (20-8-2, 15-7-2-0 WCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Cuglietta gave the home team the lead 7:10 into the game. Max Humitz and Anthony Nellis assisted.

Humitz added to the lead with 1:50 left in the opening frame with Cuglietta assisting.

"A lot of guys are growing and getting a lot of ice time," said Shawhan. "The mood of the team is good. We'll go back to work on Monday and get ready for Anchorage."

Tech returns home next weekend against Alaska Anchorage. Saturday will be Junior Hockey Night with Skate with the Huskies taking place after the game.
