Huskies fall at Clarkson Saturday to end road trip

POTSDAM, NY – For the second night in a row, the Michigan Tech hockey team fell 3-1 at Clarkson as the Golden Knights scored an empty net goal in the final stages. Jake Lucchini scored the lone goal for the Huskies on Saturday (Nov. 17) at Cheel Arena.
Tech is now 5-5 overall and wrapped up its eight-game road trip with a 5-3 record. Clarkson is now 6-4 on the season.
"There were a lot of similarities as last night," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We take over momentum and get a goal and then give up a sloppy one right away on one of those goofy plays behind the net.
"I'm not disappointed in the effort at all. They just made a couple of shots like that power play goal from the outside in the first period."
Greg Moro put the home team up 11:43 into the game with a power play goal from Nico Sturm and Haralks Egle.
Lucchini tied it up for the Huskies 2:12 after the first intermission. Dylan Steman won a faceoff back to Lucchini. He had time and space and wristed the puck past Jake Kielly for his team-leading fifth of the season.
It didn't take long for Clarkson to regain its lead. Marly Quince buried the game-winner only 35 seconds after the Huskies tied the game. The officials had a lengthy review on the play, but the goal stood. Juho Jokiharju added the assist.
Nico Sturm added the empty-netter with 51 seconds left in the game.
The two teams combined for 13 minor penalties. The Huskies were 0-for-6 on the man advantage and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Shots were 26-25 in favor of the Huskies after taking seven shots in the first, 14 in the second, and five in the third.
"Their big defenseman shut down our forwards one-on-one in that third period," added Shawhan. "They just let Kielly stop the puck and then they cleaned up all the rebounds. I like the way Clarkson plays. They rely on their D and their goaltender. We missed the net on a lot of opportunities. We need to spend more time on those hard areas."
Devin Kero had 22 saves for the Huskies for his third start of the season. Kielly had 25 saves for the Golden Knights.
The Huskies will finally return home next weekend (Nov. 23-24), hosting Alaska at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Copper Country Strong game is Friday when the Huskies will wear special Thatcher Markham jerseys that will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Portage Health Foundation's Flood with Love initiative.
