Huskies drop close game at Clarkson Friday

POTSDAM, NY – The Michigan Tech hockey team had its four-game winning streak snapped as Clarkson defeated the Huskies 3-1 Friday (Nov. 16) at Cheel Arena.

"Clarkson played an excellent hockey game. They did a good job of taking away the critical ice in front of the net," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We did generate a lot of offense and did some good things, but every little play matters, and tonight they made those plays."

Clarkson (5-4) hopped out to the early lead 3:19 into the game with a goal by Jack Jacome. He cleaned up a rebound in front of the net with assists going to Kevin Charyszyn and Aaron Thow.

Tech (5-4) tied it up 3:56 after the first intermission when Raymond Brice scored his second goal in the last three games. Justin Misiak carried the puck across center ice and veered towards the middle to draw both defensemen. He slid it over to Brice who went low glove on a wrist shot for his sixth career goal.

It didn't take long for the Golden Knights to regain their lead. Haralds Egle picked up a loose puck behind the net and flipped it in 2:26 after the Huskies had tied it. Nico Sturm assisted on the play.

Grant Cooper scored an empty-net goal with 16 seconds left for the final tally.

Tech outshot Clarkson 27-21 in the game. Goaltender Matt Jurusik had 18 saves for the Huskies, while Jake Kielly stopped 26 shots.

Keegan Ford thought he scored in the first period but the whistle had blown as the net was knocked off before the puck went into the back of the net.

Greyson Reitmeier nailed the post to the left of Kielly later in the first.

Cooper Watson and Gavin Gould both had chances on setup feeds in front of Kielly in the second period, but he was there for the save each time.

The Black and Gold dominated the early part of the third-period cycling in the offensive zone and generating five shots. Coach Shawhan pulled Jurusik late in the game, but the Huskies didn't find any scoring chances.

"We played a very perimeter game today," added Shawhan. "Their goaltender has won a lot of games for them, and he was able to see the shots we sent his way."

The two teams combined for 10 penalties, totaling 28 minutes. The Huskies were 0-for-4 on the power play but 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

The Huskies will wrap up their eight-game road trip on Saturday in the series finale. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
