Huskies sweep Ferris State with 4-3 win Saturday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Ferris State 4-3 and sweep the Bulldogs Saturday (Nov. 10) at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Huskies have now won four straight and improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the WCHA.

"This was a fun weekend of hockey," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Both teams just went at it. I feel like a proud father right now. We've been challenging the guys in practice and we're getting contributions from everybody."

Midway through the second period, the Huskies found themselves down 3-1. Ferris was called for a penalty and Tech took advantage. Jake Lucchini buried a one-timer from Seamus Donohue at the 9:41 mark to make it 3-2.

Dylan Steman picked a perfect time to score his first of the season 65 seconds later to tie it at three. A shot by Donohue was rebounded out to Steman who corralled the puck, spun, and fired it under Ferris goaltender Roni Salmenkangas. Lucchini also assisted.

Lucchini then scored the eventual game-winner 4:00 after the equalizer when he jammed in a rebound after Trenton Bliss ripped a shot from the blue line. It was Lucchini's fourth goal of the season—all coming in the last three games. Steman added his first assist of the season with the secondary helper.

"It's big games and big points on the line and getting excited for every game," Lucchini said. "These conference points are so big early in the season. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going."

Tommy Parrottino opened scoring 7:41 into the game for his second of the weekend and third overall. Alex Smith carried the puck to the net and casually dropped it off to Parrottiono at the doorstep for an easy tap-in. Gavin Gould also assisted.

Ferris (4-6, 2-2 WCHA) scored three straight to take the lead. Coale Norris scored on the power play with a long shot through traffic 10:07 into the first.

Jasen Fernsler gave the home team the lead 66 seconds into the second, and Nate Kallen made it 3-1 at 6:22 before the Tech comeback.

Tech outshot Ferris 33-23 in the game and shut down the Bulldogs late, allowing only two shots in the final 20:00.

Matt Jurusik had 12 saves through the first 28:00 of the game before Robbie Beydoun stepped in for the final 32:00. Beydoun earned the win, stopping all eight of the shots he faced.

"Robbie pitched another goose egg, coming in at 3-1," added Shawhan. "I told the staff during that second intermission that I hope Robbie has a great period and just makes my life miserable with these goaltender decisions. Good for him."

The Huskies will wrap up their eight-game road trip next weekend (Nov. 16-17) at Clarkson. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since the 1970 NCAA Semifinal.
