Late goal by Misiak gives Tech win Friday at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team won its third straight game, and fourth in the last five, with a 5-4 victory at Ferris State Friday (Nov. 9) at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Five different Huskies scored with Justin Misiak burying the game-winner with 7:15 remaining.

"That was a fun hockey game to watch," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "Both teams are young and learning. I'm proud of the way we played and the effort we had tonight. I like our team. We have some size, we have some strength, and we have some creativity."

Tied up at four midway through the third period—and the Bulldogs just coming off back-to-back power plays—the Huskies finally got the break they needed. Zach Noble carried the puck up ice and chipped it over to Justin Misiak, entering the offensive zone. Misiak fired a wrist shot below the glove of Ferris State goaltender Roni Salmenkangas for the eventual game-winner.

"It was a tough and fun game and the penalty killing guys did a great job in that third period," added Shawhan. "We held our own after that Misiak goal."

The Bulldogs outshot the Huskies 11-7 in the third period and pulled their goaltender with 80 seconds left. Tech goalie Matt Jurusik had to make only one save with the extra attacker, finishing with 23 saves in his fifth straight start.

Tech (4-3, 3-0 WCHA) twice held a two-goal lead in the game. Trenton Bliss put the Huskies on the board only 1:13 after the initial puck drop, finishing off a 2-on-0 breakaway for his second of the season. Jake Lucchini assisted for the first of two helpers in the game.

Raymond Brice buried his first of the year less than 3:00 later on a sharp-angled shot as a Tech power play was expiring. Tyler Rockwell had the assist.

Ferris (4-5, 2-1 WCHA) tied it up in the first with a pair of goals by Marshall Moise. He scored at the 7:12 mark and then at 11:31 on the power play.

Tommy Parrottino put the visitors back on top when he batted a loose puck out of midair for his second of the season with Lucchini and Seamus Donohue assisting at 14:15.

Brian Halonen wristed in his second of the season 9:00 into the second from Greyson Reitmeier and Brice for a 4-2 Tech lead.

The Bulldogs responded again with a power play goal by Jason Tackett with 6:54 left in the second. Jasen Fernsler tied it up for the home team 10:03 into the third.

Tech outshot Ferris 31-27 in the game, including a dominating 15-5 first period.

The Huskies and Bulldogs will wrap up their only series of the season on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
