UMD has strong second period to defeat Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. – No. 19-ranked Michigan Tech lost 5-2 to No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Saturday (Oct. 13) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Bulldogs scored five goals including four straight in the second period to take control.
"I'm very disappointed," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "We got beat in every aspect of the game. It was a group effort that lost this hockey game, including me. But, I don't want to take anything away from Duluth. They went after us right from the start."
Devin Kero kept the Huskies alive in the first period, stopping all 13 shots he faced. UMD (2-1-1) finally cracked him 1:17 into the second on a goal by Dylan Samberg after a behind the net feed from Parker Mackay. Mikey Anderson also assisted.
Tech (0-2) tied it up at the 5:03 mark as Andrew Bellant scored his first goal in his first collegiate game, finishing off a 2-on-1 break with Jake Jackson. Alex Smith added the secondary assist as Bellant went backhand over the pad of UMD goaltender Hunter Shepard.
"It was exciting playing in my first game," Bellant said. "I got my first goal to tie it and that was exciting, but it means nothing. It's a 5-2 loss. We need to work harder and be accountable for each other."
It was all UMD to end the middle period. Riley Tufte scored on the power play at 11:09. Mackay found the back of the net for the second time this weekend at 14:29. Tanner Laderoute scored the final two goals for the Bulldogs at 15:31 and 18:19.
Cooper Watson scored his first collegiate goal with 50 seconds left in the game, finishing off a setup pass by Brian Halonen. Alec Broetzman added the second assist as the two freshmen forwards got in the point column for the first time.
Kero finished the game with 27 saves in the first two periods. Robbie Beydoun played the third and stopped all six shots he faced. Shepard had 11 saves for UMD.
Tech was 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill after six penalties were called in the game.
Steve Coates and Kip Noble dropped the puck in a pregame ceremony. The former Huskies were inducted into the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame Friday. Coates played from 1969-73 and is a broadcast professional with the Philadelphia Flyers. Noble is the highest scoring defenseman in Tech history with 123 points in 156 games.
The Huskies have next weekend off before a trip to the University of Wisconsin on October 26-27 for another nonconference series.
