Ferris State defeats Tech Saturday Play Video

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Michigan Tech fell 3-1 at Ferris State Saturday (Jan. 27) night in front of sellout crowd at Ewibleben Ice Arena. Alex Smith scored the lone Huskies' goal in the third period.

"I'm not happy with the result, but the guys played hard," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "A lot of guys played roles they're not used to. We will be able to use this as an evaluation for our players and program moving forward."

Due to injuries, the Huskies started the game short a defenseman and a forward and then lost another forward in the first period. Through it all, Tech led in shots on a goal and dominated play for much of the game.

After a scoreless opening 20:00, the Bulldogs scored three goals in the second period. Corey Mackin buried on the power play 5:13 into the middle frame. Coale Norris added to the lead 5:00 later, and Lucas Finner scored shorthanded with just over a minute left.

Smith made it a two-goal game 13:09 into the third, scoring his seventh of the season from Gavin Gould. He put in a rebound after his initial shot was saved as the two teams skated 4-on-4.

Coach Shawhan pulled goaltender Patrick Munson for the extra attacker with 1:51 left in the third, but the Huskies were only able to get one shot through to the net down the stretch.

Tech outshot Ferris 27-24. Munson finished with 21 saves, while Darren Smith stopped 26 shots for the Bulldogs.

The two teams combined for 17 penalties. Tech was 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The Huskies are now 13-11-5 overall and 9-8-5-2 in the WCHA and continue their four-game road trip at Bowling Green next weekend (Feb. 2-3) for the final WCHA road series of the season.

Tech is 0-2-1 versus the Falcons this season after a meeting in Houghton on November 3-4 and in the GLI Championship Game at Little Caesars Arena on January 2.
