Hockey falls Friday at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team began its four-game road trip with a 4-3 loss at Ferris State Friday (Jan. 26). The two teams combined for five special teams goals with the Bulldogs getting the final tally with 1:04 left in the second period.
"It was a disappointing game," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "These are the ones that can emotionally defeat you. This game is typical of what we've faced from the start of the season. We didn't get the stops we needed and they played shutdown hockey after taking the lead."
The Huskies (13-10-5, 9-7-5-2 WCHA) found themselves down 3-1 5:00 into the second period after back-to-back power-play goals by the home team.
Tech then went on a 5:00 power play and was able to climb back in with a pair of goals. Gavin Gould scored his team-leading ninth of the season at the 7:46 mark to make it 3-2. Joel L'Esperance found Gould open in the slot after Greyson Reitmeier stole the puck from the Ferris goaltender.
Thomas Beretta tied it up 1:26 later on the same power play, scoring for the third game in a row. He blasted in a one-touch pass from Dylan Steman for his seventh of the season. Mark Auk added the secondary assist.
Ryker Killins scored the game-winning goal on the man advantage late in the second on a long shot through traffic from Nate Kallen and Lucas Finner
Tech dominated in shots 38-18 with 11 in each of the first two periods and 16 in the third.
Coach Shawhan took his timeout and pulled Patrick Munson with 1:51 remaining but the Huskies couldn't find the equalizer. Gould was alone out front with 2:10 left but couldn't gain possession of the puck, and then Jake Jackson deflected a Justin Misiak shot wide with 56 seconds left.
Munson started the game and had 12 saves in 43:24. Devin Kero played the final 15:04 of the second period.
Ferris State (11-17-1, 8-12-1-0 WCHA) scored only 1:17 into the game for the initial lead. Trevor Recktenwald got the home team on the board from Lucas Finner and Liam MacDougall.
Reitmeier tied it at one 7:32 into the first as he banged in a rebound after a Misiak shot. Mitch Meek added the second assist.
The Bulldogs opened up the second with power-play goals by Killins and Coale Norris 14 seconds apart for the 3-1 lead.
Dylan Steman (5), Greyson Reitmeier (4), Mark Auk (3), and Thomas Beretta (3) all extended their point streaks.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend and season series Saturday (Jan. 27). Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
