Mavericks Win 5-3 Saturday Play Video

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 16-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision at No. 12 Minnesota State Saturday (Oct. 28) at the Verizon Center. Similar to Friday night, the Mavericks scored a pair of goals late in the third period to secure the win.

Jake Jackson had two goals and an assist while Joel L'Esperance added the third Husky tally. Goaltender Patrick Munson had 34 saves.

"I thought our guys worked very hard tonight," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I'm happy with the effort we put in for the first 55 minutes. The way it ended leaves a real sour taste in your mouth.

"We juggled our lines a bit, and we got some spark. I felt confident with all four lines tonight. That'll give us something to build on going forward."

Jackson scored his third of the season 54 seconds into the game to give the Huskies the lead. He shelved in a wrist shot from the faceoff dot to the left of MSU goaltender Connor LaCouvee. Greyson Reitmeier and Mitch Reinke assisted on the play.

The Mavericks tied it up just over 6:00 later on a goal by Reggie Lutz as Munson was screened out front.

Zeb Knutson gave the home team the lead 2:44 into the second, before the Huskies scored two straight to take a lead, heading into the third.

Jackson buried his second of the game 14:19 into the second on a setup pass by Justin Misiak on the power play. MSU was about to be called for another penalty on a high stick but the call was nullified after the power play tally by Jackson. Alex Smith added the secondary assist.

L'Esperance gave the Black and Gold a 3-2 lead with 1:50 left in the second, finishing off a feed out front from Reitmeier. It was L'Esperance's sixth of the year with Jackson picking up his third point of the night on the secondary assist.

MSU (5-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) tied the game up 4:16 after the second intermission on a goal by Connor Mackey.

Then the penalty minutes started to pile up. The two teams combined for 15 penalties in the third period, including nine on Tech, and the Mavericks took advantage. Daniel Brickley and CJ Suess scored power play goals 63 seconds apart with under 4:00 remaining to get the victory.

In total, there were 21 infractions in the game. The Huskies were 1-for-6 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.

MSU (5-2-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) outshot Tech 39-19 on the night. Munson had 13 saves in the first period and 12 in the third. LaCouvee stopped 16 shots for the home team.

The Huskies are 4-4-1 overall and 2-3-1-1 in the WCHA and return home next weekend (Nov. 3-4), hosting Bowling Green in the first of two meetings with the Falcons this season. The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. both nights from the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
